It’s hard to be surprised anymore by the disinformation and ignorance on social media, but in this case, the hamster wheel has spun to a new level of absurdity. We’re headquartered in Los Angeles and our colleagues have also lost their homes and been displaced. But even in the chaos and uncertainty, no one should be allowed to spread uninformed, discredited, and false claims.
There is zero truth that any individual or company, much less ours, owns or controls most of the water in California. It’s also not true we have anything to do with water supplied to Los Angeles. Water intended for municipal use is not taken for agricultural purposes or food production.
Here are the facts about The Wonderful Company and our founders Stewart and Lynda Resnick:
- We use less than 1% of the state’s water and do so as part of a community of farmers and ranchers who together produce a quarter of our nation’s food.
- We produce exclusively healthy foods with protein, vitamin C, and antioxidants.
- It takes water to grow crops. We’re one of the nation’s largest producers of food, so we require more water than others and use it responsibly and sustainably.
- We own a 57% stake in the Kern Water Bank, not the state of California’s water resources. This water bank in Kern County conserves water that would be lost to the sea because the state doesn’t have other infrastructure to capture or store it.
- The water bank is owned by multiple entities that serve hundreds of family farmers and ranchers who need the water to grow food and raise livestock. The water bank also serves the municipal water needs of the city of Bakersfield.
- It’s been nearly two decades since Wonderful sold any water to the state. At the time, it was as part of a state-sponsored program that many other public and private entities participated in.
The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California has more water stored in its system than it ever has in its history. The right questions to ask are not about any one sector or company, but about what the government could have done differently and to acknowledge the challenges of climate change rather than wasting time with hateful rhetoric and bizarre claims from extreme conspiracy theorists.
Right now, we are focused on the people of Los Angeles, our employees, and fellow citizens. We have been prioritizing their safety and directing bottled water and snack donations to first responders over the past week. We are making additional donations of different kinds to support the ongoing relief efforts.
